Our Love Story

Some love stories begin with grand gestures. Ours began with two seatmates in their final year of high school.

Mary and Rhenz were assigned to sit beside each other in MAPEH class, given the playful code names “B7” and “G7.” What started as simple eye-contact challenges and competitive games of SOS slowly became something neither of them fully understood at the time. Back then, Rhenz believed Mary was far too focused on her dreams and responsibilities to ever think about romance — and so he quietly admired her from beside her desk.

Life moved forward after graduation, and they went their separate ways. But fate had other plans.

One unexpected day, they were both invited to a Barangay Fiesta by a high school classmate. Neither of them knew the other would be there. Seeing each other again after so long felt like time had paused — and then suddenly rushed back all at once. In that moment, something stirred in Rhenz’s heart. Their conversation was easy, familiar, and comforting. He realized how much he had missed her — not just as a seatmate, but as someone who had quietly become special to him.

It was then that he decided he didn’t want to miss another chance.

They began talking again and chose to keep their relationship private while finishing their degrees. Their love grew in quiet ways — in simple dates at Peñaranda Park, in shared dreams, in long conversations about the future. Rhenz deeply admired Mary’s devotion to her family and her determination to succeed. Loving her meant wanting the very best for her.

And sometimes, loving someone means letting them go.

Fearing that their secret relationship might distract Mary from her studies and her dreams, Rhenz made the painful decision to step away. It was one of the hardest choices he had ever made — choosing her future over his own happiness.

Years later, they saw each other again at their 2017 high school reunion. Hearing Mary talk about working in Metro Manila while Rhenz was completing his apprenticeship made them both realize how much they had grown. When their classmates discovered their history, the teasing laughter brought back memories — but it also reminded them that some stories are never truly over.

Though time had passed, Rhenz never stopped wondering about her. He questioned the timing, wondered if she had moved on, and wrestled with his fears. But his heart remained certain — he still loved her.

In February 2018, he decided to work in Metro Manila, hoping destiny might bring them closer again. Then in June 2018, a simple text message changed everything. When the sender revealed herself as Mary Joy, Rhenz’s heart raced with shock and excitement. After all that time, it was her.

They started talking again. Slowly. Carefully. Hopefully.

After heartfelt conversations and a few meaningful dates, they chose each other once more. In November 2018, they officially rekindled their love — not as teenagers this time, but as two people who had grown, matured, and understood the value of second chances.

Mary once shared that being Accountant was her dream. Although challenges led her to graduate with a degree in Mathematics, Rhenz never forgot that dream. Loving her meant supporting her, believing in her, and standing beside her as she chased what once felt impossible.

In August 2020, she began her Accountancy journey despite the uncertainty of the pandemic. Through long-distance struggles, sacrifices, and countless prayers, they remained strong. After four years of perseverance and love across the miles, Mary finally graduated in June 2024 — a testament to her resilience and to the unwavering support they gave each other.

After her graduation, they began building a life side by side. Conversations about their wedding became filled with laughter, excitement, and gratitude for how far they had come.

In February 2025, Rhenz began planning the proposal he had long dreamed of. In May, under the simple excuse of an election-related trip, he traveled to her province — not for politics, but to humbly ask for her parents’ blessing.

Then in June 2025, surrounded by nature on a quiet camping trip, Rhenz asked the question that had been written in his heart for years.

From seatmates…

to almost…

to second chances…

to forever.

Their story is proof that true love waits, grows, sacrifices, and always finds its way back home.
